Gemini South Telescope - Cerro Pachon

Image 26 of 72

Twin 8.1 meter diam. altitude-azimuth mounted telescopes, with the northern hemisphere observatory located on Mauna Kea, HI, USA and the southern hemisphere observatory located on Cerro Pachon, CHILE. LO/MIT-I was rolled on primed cold-rolled steel.

The Gemini telescopes were designed and built to provide the best image quality possible from the ground for telescopes of their size and to provide the cleanest possible telescopes (lowest emissivity) for optimal infrared observing on the ground.

The low emissivity characteristics of the LO/MIT coating are ideal for large ground-based telescopes of this nature.
